Finally, I pried myself away from the chains! Here are two of my latest endeavors. The top picture has a vintage focal cab I bought from a friend. Originally, I was going to make this pendant pink. I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but it morphed into this coppery coral. Much more my colors anyway. I felt like I was coming home when I started beading it. As much as I enjoy other kinds of beading, embroidery will always be my first love.

The second picture is a pendant I just finished this week. I'm not sure what the stone is, but it reminded me of pictures of the earth from space. It was fun pulling the colors from the stone to use in this piece. As most of you know, they are rather subtle for me. Can I help it if I'm drawn to intense colors?

Eleven of us went to the NorCal Bead Bazaar in Oakland earlier this month. As always, it was a great show. We came home with lots of goodies and had great fun showing them to each other on the train ride home. I think we have become spoiled riding the train up to Oakland. We have lots of time to bead, chat, read or doze as we choose. There are no parking fees to worry about and much less stress. Amtrak gives you bus passes to and from the station to the Convention Center so there is no cost there. The only drawback we have discovered is that they don't stop at Dairy Queen. LOL

CCBS is well on it's way to another good year. At our March meeting this Saturday, we will return the Brown Bag Challenge kits to their respective owners. Each of us made up a kit of beads we wanted to have made up for ourselves. This was given to another member to bead. I had fun working on my kit for one of our newer members. Hope she likes what I did.

New Year, New Ideas

This year is shaping up to be a busy one. I was just elected President of the Central California Bead Society and I'm very honored. I hope to carry on the traditions set before me. CCBS is a very active club and we have some great plans in the works for this year. I'll keep you posted.

As I mentioned in my last post, I have become addicted to working with chain, thanks to a class I took from Beki Haley last November at BABE. I always knew Beki was mesmerizing, but wow! I think she created a monster here. LOL I can't seem to stop and the ideas just keep coming. I will be teaching a class on working with chain and beads this next weekend at Beads, Etc. in Clovis,CA. That is my LBS and my home away from home. I usually spend three days a week at the shop. Sometimes I just bead, but I help stock the shop and run the register as well. One of my best friends (like a sister) owns the shop and her youngest daughter, Beth, manages it for her. Since I was blessed with Grandsons, I have adopted Beth as a Granddaughter. I couldn't have a better one if she was related by blood. She has spent many hours working on revamping the shop and it shows. It is open, light and bright, and displays many types of beads. We have regularly scheduled classes on Saturdays and some evenings during the week. We also have several of our teachers available for individual classes and spontaneous demonstrations all week long.

Pictured here is a bracelet made with the new Tila Beads. It's easy enough for beginners, but not boring for more experienced beaders. This particular bracelet is my design. I have seen it done in many color combinations now and love it more each time.

Sadly, with all my new responsibilities this year, I have had to forgo doing the Bead Journal Project for the 4th year. I just wouldn't have time to do it justice. This is not to say I have stopped doing bead embroidery. Don't think that will happen until I just cannot hold a needle anymore. God willing, that will be many years down the road.

I just received my pieces back from the publisher who is releasing Jamie Cloud Eakins' new book this Fall. I have the honor of having my work included in the Gallery of her book. Can't wait to see it. It should be released in October. Jamie has some wonderful information in it, and the eye candy from her projects is stunning.

This Is What I Have Been Beading

Back in mid-November, I took a great class from Beki Haley(Out on a Whim) at the BABE Show in Oakland. It was about working with chain and beads. Being predominately a bead embroiderer, this was fairly new to me. Little did I know what I was getting myself in to. It has become a bit of an obsession. Since Thanksgiving, I have made over 50, yes I said 50, pieces. Those who know me, know I rarely go more than a few days without working on bead embroidery. I haven't done any since I took this class. Can you believe it?

I made up a few pieces to show the family at Thanksgiving and all the ladies put their orders in for Christmas gifts. I bought what I thought would be a sufficient supply of different chains while at BABE. Boy was I wrong. You know how you hate it when you are just lacking a few beads to finish a project? It's just as bad when you need just a couple of more inches of chain. I won't tell you how much I've spent on chain since BABE..........

Each piece of chain suggests a new design. Every bead I see, must be combined with just the right chain to make a beautiful necklace, earring or bracelet. In addition to making a multitude of gifts, I must have almost doubled my own jewelry stash.

How was your Christmas? Mine has been terrific! We have a good sized extended family who celebrates holidays together. We traditionally open our gifts on Christmas Eve to allow time to visit other friends and family on Christmas Day. The food is good, the company even better. The age ranges from about 10 months to those even older than me( and we all know I'm getting up there. lol). As little as I like the grandsons growing up, they have become wonderful young men. They are 21, 17 and 11 years old now, and are a pure pleasure to be around. They are funny, articulate and well mannered.

In addition to our family party, the LBS (Beads, Etc. in Clovis, CA) where I teach always has a party for staff and close friends. The food was yummy and plentiful. We exchange gifts with each other and this year I received wonderful baked goodies, candy and some great beady gifts that I will put to good use.

This time of year lends itself to reflecting on our blessings. I have a multitude of them. I have a wonderful family and friends I can call on for help and encouragement. They are always there for me. A retired RN, beading has become an obsession to me. It has literally opened up the world for me. It is such fun to go online and exchange ideas with beaders all over the world. I am truly blessed.

No matter how you celebrate this holiday season, I hope you find joy and happiness in your life for the coming year.

Finished this one

This is the cuff Sherry Serafini taught at the Beads Unique Tahoe Retreat this year. Isn't it yummy? I finished it yesterday. Obviously, I was in a hurry to get a picture of it. Can you see my reflection in the cab? LOL I will eventually take a better picture, but I wanted to blog about this class and the others we took while in Tahoe City. The weather was glorious and the company wonderful. Five of us went from Clovis/Fresno. We had a great two bedroom condo with a full kitchen and two baths. Rose, Rhonda, BJ, Billie and I drove up on Wednesday a week ago. On Thursday we had some marvelous classes with Linda Hartung and her daughter and Laura Timmons. Very talented ladies all. We (all the students) received a huge bagful of free goodies. Linda showed us another way to use Wire lace and Laura taught us how to make a beautiful crocheted wire necklace. Thursday night we had a Dessert Social, met our teachers for the weekend and bought our kits for the classes.
We had three groups of students and rotated the classes each day. We were in the Lake Group and started the weekend with Sherry Serafini, a very good place to start. Unlike other classes with Sherry, this cuff is not all bead embroidery. It has RAW with embellishments in it and is attached to the metal cuff after all beading is done. It has bling to die for and is stunning! She will have a new book coming out in 2011. Can't be too soon for me.
Saturday found us in Jeannette Cook's class. What a challenging piece she offered us. It has RAW, brick stitch, and netting in it. It has many parts, each of which is fun to work on. I will post it when I get it finished. Jeannette is a super teacher and very patient. I wonder where she heard about the Clovis girls???? Could it be from MDC?
Sunday we had a class with Jean Campbell, beader and editor extraordinaire. What a fun class she had for us. Makes you wonder how her mind works with the pieces fitting inside other pieces to make a stunning gold cuff. We got a sneak peek at her new book! Absolutely gorgeous! Can't wait to get it.
We had get togethers every evening, with drawing for more free treats and contests. Iris and I won the Challenge this year. Not bad with Clovis girls winning two years in a row.
I will blog about Jeanette's necklace and Jean's cuff as I get them finished.
It seems I am going to have some work to do over the next months. I have to finish my BJP project by January and you may be seeing me in Beads Unique soon. I also have a number of Christmas gifts to make yet.
I have to admit I am behind in my Bead Journal pages this year. I went on a major crystal binge over the summer. Can't seem to stop using those sparkly little things. lol I would feel guilty about being so far behind, but I've been having way too much fun.

New Work

Well, our CCBS Bead Show has come and gone once again. It seemed to be successful. All the vendors looked busy most of the day. Putting on a bead show takes many people and the cooperation of all. Our CCBS President, Jennifer, headed up the show committee this year. In addition to our annual raffle, this year we also had a silent auction. There were some beautiful pieces of artwork in it. I must say, I'm glad it's over for another year, but will look forward to next year's show.

This first picture is a pendant I made for a friend's birthday. It started out to be a bracelet. lol. It just wasn't working for me so I turned it into a pendant. I haven't done any brickstitch for a while, but it made a nice bale with a little embellishment.

This is also a pendant. It was hung on a Kumihimo cord I made using the colors in the pendant. This work was part of a Kit Challenge in CCBS. We each buy a kit with all of the same beads and go from there. It's always fun. This year's kit was a bit too pastel for me, but, oh well. It's good to get out of your box once in a while.
This last picture is a soft bead embroidered cuff. Jamie Cloud Eakin challenged me to do one with just seedbeads. This is the result. The major lines are done with back stitch and the rest with moss stitch (or random picots). It was kind of fun to do this one.

Now to get back to my BJP pages. I haven't totally neglected them, but they had to take a back seat for a while.

Summer Vacation- Not

I didn't really have a summer vacation, per se. I did spend three days up in the Sierras on a Bead Retreat with the Central California Bead Society. It was great having Marcia DeCoster all to ourselves. As always, she was a delight. The weather was warm, but beautiful and the food was wonderful. Joy brought up some awesome wooden cigar boxes for those of us with a fetish for boxes. We also had an impromptu bead sale. All in all, a great Retreat.
This first picture is a necklace similar to one seen in a UK beading magazine. I fell in love with it and made it. Haven't decided yet whether to embellish it.

These are just a few of the earrings I have made this summer, so far. I have been on a roll with them, for sure. Many of them are made with Peacock Beads. They come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Definitely a find for earrings.
The bracelets are a recent addiction. Russian Spiral isn't new, of course, but me working with this many crystals certainly is. LOL I remember a time when I thought crystals were "the dark side". I would seldom use them in my work. Ha! Boy, has that changed! The top bracelet is in multi shades of green. Had to go buy a top to wear with it. LOL
The second bracelet is in pinks, teals, and purples. These are colors I wear a lot.
The next one is in two shades of purple. Couldn't pass them up.
The fourth one is in all the fall colors. This one and the above were made using only two stitches around instead of three. Love the way they feel.

The last bracelet is done with three stitches around, but I found it tends to stretch a bit even when using double thread. I reinforced it by going through the spirals of seed beads. It was done with Fuchsia crystals and #648 seed beads. Gorgeous combination!

Have tons of plans for the next few months, including three bead shows, and a Retreat in Tahoe. Going to be a busy Fall.

Victorian Elegance

I finally quit procrastinating and took the pictures for my BFAC (Beading For a Cure) project. Just have to package it up and get it in the mail on Friday. I loved the kit this year. I knew the second I got it just what I was going to do with it. I have seen pictures of some beautiful projects with this kit. Beki Haley from Out on a Whim did a great job picking the colors this year.

Beading for a Cure was started some years ago after a fellow beader, Layne Shilling died of colorectal cancer. It's a tribute to her and a joy to see how it has grown over the years. There were 75 kits sold this year. In March and April, all the projects made with this kit will be auctioned off on eBay with the funds earned going to Colorectal Cancer Research. I'm proud to be a part of this group.

In other news, I am happy to announce that some of my bead embroidery work is going to be included in Jamie Cloud Eakin's new book which is due out in October 2011. Jamie is a prolific beader and wonderful teacher. She is one of those people who shares her knowledge of bead embroidery freely and you can tell it brings her much joy.

What I have been doing

Well, as usual, I have been staying busy beading. The top picture is my Red Cuff. I'm trying to make each cuff as different as possible even though I'm using the same techniques. Sometimes it's a bit of a challenge. Working with all red is definitely not my favorite color palette.
I used shell ovals as my centers in this cuff. I call it Beach. It was originally supposed to be straight on the sides, but it called for me to accent the oval shapes so the scissors came out. Working on cuffs is a great way to try new color combinations to see how they work together.

I have to give the cuffs a rest for a bit and catch up on my other beading obligations. Never fear, there will be more of them. LOL.

My friend, Sandy, and I went to an Indian Pow Wow this morning. This picture was taken there shortly before the battery in my camera died. The regalia was out of this world. The beading was exquisite. It was a treat to see whole families participating in the parade, chants, and dancing. It was pretty warm so we only stayed a couple of hours, but managed to at least get a wonderful Indian Taco for lunch. I want to go again so I can get pictures of the beautiful beadwork. It was astounding.

Latest Cuffs

These are the latest cuffs I've finished. The top one is called Southwestern Nights. I am continuing to try new patterns of beading. I want to learn to use each bead in as many ways as possible. I particularly like the beading around the cabochon. It's just one of many ways to capture a cabochon. I hope to get to all of them eventually.

Purple Shimmer was just fun to make. I needed something to wear with all the purple I own. It was also a great way to use these gorgeous 3-cuts.

Mother's Day was a bit sad for me this year. Staying busy with my beads helps a lot. I call it my therapy. Much cheaper than seeing a doctor. And at least I have something to show for it afterwards.

Taught a fun class in beading around a cabochon today. We had lots of giggles and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Copper Lace

Well, here it is. Copper Lace in its entirety. I had sooo much fun working on this cuff. I don't usually work in monochromatic color schemes, but it was fun and I will do it again. With just the one cab, it fits like a dream.

These are the seedbeads I rescued from Out on a Whim. Can you believe they had them just sitting out there for anyone to see them? I knew they were mine immediately. Beki and Shawn, along with Shawna, Nikki, Tracy and the rest of their crew were not fast enough to stop me. It was wonderful to see everyone there and have the chance to visit with them. It is always like old home week when we get together.
This picture shows the strands of small gemstones, etc. that I love to use in my bead embroidery. I just can't seem to get enough of them. I also picked up some earring findings and a few cabs to play with.

This last picture makes me drool. They are all either charlottes or 3cuts. Makes the work and the world sparkle.

All in all, the train trip to NorCal was a blast. Eight of us went on the train and we met a couple more CCBS members who had driven up. They were on their way to Camp Paradise for a retreat. Hope they have fun. There were lots of good vendors, but the crowds weren't as dense as usual. Those who were there seemed to be buying though. I was able to talk to Janet Farris for a bit. She's so busy these days, I only get to see her at shows. Had a nice visit with Lisa Kan at her booth. Her work is incredible. It was a good kind of tired I was feeling by the time we got home last night.

Sneek Peek at new cuff

Here is a peek at my newest cuff. Those who know me, know I am not a monochromatic girl. Usually I go for brights and lots of contrasts. When I started pulling beads for this cuff, I kept putting back all the sharply contrasting beads. They didn't satisfy me somehow. I also tend to work in color blocks, but I am working out some new (for me) patterns with this cuff. What do you think?

As in my last couple of cuffs, I am using no peyote, or other conventional stitches. I'm also only using one stone. Very different for me. I am going to explore using different techniques for a while and see where it takes me.

I'm looking forward to taking the train with friends up to Oakland for the NorCal Bead Bazaar this Saturday. It's sure to be a wonderful show. I know Out on a Whim will have all kinds of new goodies to buy and I'll be looking for some different kinds of focal pieces for my bead embroidery. I'll be sure to take pictures of my stash when I get back so I can share them.

Just Cuff Me

I have been on a bead embroidery binge lately. Does that surprise anyone? I didn't think so. These are two cuffs I recently finished. I am working on a pendant to go with the top one. I have recently learned some new techniques which are improving my work. The top cuff is called Ocean Deep and the bottom one is called Forest Pools. Have you ever noticed that it is sometimes harder to name a piece than it is to make it?

I just got back from a week at the coast. It was heaven! I went with a friend and we had such a good time. Rested a lot...read a lot..... shopped a lot.... and of course, beaded a lot. Was able to have dinner with my oldest grandson and his girlfriend. That is always a treat. They are working and going to college in San Luis Obispo. I'm very proud of them.

Went right back to work at Beads, Etc in Clovis when I got back to town. My middle grandson and his other grandmother came in to see me. He's 16. The youngest grandson is almost 11 now and very busy into sports. I love them all dearly.

Well, back to work now. I have to do some writing for the Central California Bead Society newsletter. It's a very active group and I enjoy it immensely.

Just finished

I just finished this necklace about an hour ago. It's called Bohemian Lace and is one of the classes I took a couple of weeks ago from Melanie Doerman. If you ever get a chance to take a class from her, jump on it. She's terrific! This is way outside my normal box. As most of you know, I'm very in to bead embroidery. It was so much fun making all the components for this necklace. Now I need to make a bracelet to match.

In other news, I am working hard to finish my BFAC pieces for next year's auction. I made a hard cuff (see last blog entry) and am currently making a necklace to match it.

Don't forget this year's auctions are still going on. See www.beadingforacure.org . I won a gorgeous 22" mermaid doll a couple of weeks ago. Haven't taken a picture yet, as it's currently at our LBS, Beads, Etc. in Clovis being admired by everyone. Must take my camera in tomorrow. The doll maker is Dale Subitch. She did a beautiful piece of art there. I love bidding on the auction items. The money goes to Colorectal Cancer research. You can pick up some stunning artwork for not too much money.

I was privileged to take another class recently. The teacher was Jamie Cloud Eakin. She is writing an new book and tried out her new technique on a small group of beaders. It was such fun and soooo inspirational. I have so many ideas buzzing around in my head right now. Too little time to do all of them, even if I beaded all day, every day.

BFAC Preview

I just couldn't stand not to share this with someone. This cuff is from the current BFAC kit. I fell in love with the colors immediately and knew right away what I wanted to do with it. These pictures are not the ones which will accompany my entry this year, but just some I took at home today.
This is the first time I have made a cuff on a metal blank. I did it specifically so it would fit more wrists. I prefer to make what I call soft cuffs that wrap easily around the wrist, but they must be made to fit a specific size wrist. The blank makes it more versatile. I am also going to make a matching pendant necklace to wear with it. It may be that it will be auctioned off separately. I'm not sure yet. In any case, it was a pure pleasure to work with these colors. While I immediately thought of black, this kit lends itself to many different color combinations. I can't wait to see what everyone else does with it.

The bottom picture is a close up of the sides toward the back of the cuff.

Suddenly It's Spring

We are having a warm spell here . No rain for a change and in the mid 70's. I could live with this year around.

This top picture is of one of the headlands in Cambria. It's right across the street from where I stayed last week. It was a little bit of heaven. I was able to spend a good bit of time with my oldest grandson, David, and his girlfriend, Brittany. They are the greatest kids.

The last two pictures I took at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. Brittany and I had lunch there. Good food and beautiful surroundings. Aren't those tulips gorgeous?

I actually took the train and bus over there which was quite comfortable and inexpensive. Now that I know that, you can bet I will be going more often. It had been way too long since I had seen and heard the ocean.

I've been working on my BFAC kit project. It's coming along nicely. Hope to have a picture to show you soon.

Have you ever made one?

Have you ever made a Bottle of Hope? Do you know what that is? I first became aware of BOH when I started doing polymer clay many years ago. I can remember several of us sitting around a big table with swirling mixes of PC in front of us. We decided to do BOH as a project. We covered small medication bottles with clay and decorated them to our hearts content. Some time later one of our teachers (Rhonda) taught us how to bead around them. The variations are infinite, depending on the beads you use. You can do peyote, netting, etc. or even, as in the above case, in bead embroidery. These bottles are then given to cancer patients as a symbol of hope for their recovery. It is a very worthwhile project. It is understood that these bottles are never to be sold, but are to be given as gifts. I have seldom found a more satisfying way to provide encouragement to those suffering from this dreaded disease. Try making one. Give it away. You will see what I mean.

Quick Peek at May

Just a quick peek at my May page. Can you guess what it is? Most of it is done in 15/0's with a few 11/0's thrown in. This one is very labor intensive, but I think it will be worth it. I found out it's hard to photograph all those off white beads. I'm off to teach a Freeform Peyote bracelet at Beads, Etc. today. Should be fun.

BFAC Time

Well, I just sent off my payment for my BFAC (Beading for a Cure) kit for this year. I can't wait to get it and see what colors we'll be working with. I'm not sure exactly what I'll be doing this year. Have to wait until I get the kit. I know it will be gorgeous as Beki Haley is making up the kits this year. Do you think it might have a rivoli in it? LOL.

The proceeds from the auction, which starts in March , will go to Colorectal Cancer research. Watch my blog for further info about the auctions. This is done in memory of a friend of our group named Layne. She succumbed to this kind of cancer several years ago.

In other news, I am about a third of the way finished with my May page. Once again, it will be different from the others. I am trying for a more dimensional look on this page. It will include some beautiful little star flowers I learned from Beki Haley while at the Tahoe Retreat this past October.

Tropic Carnival

Finished this a few minutes ago. Is it bright enough for you? I started out with the large square bead with the stripes. Does anyone know what it is? It's known as Fordite. In truth, it is made up of many colors of automotive paint. I pulled all my colors from this bead. As I worked, I realized it made me think of all the Carnival celebrations in Rio and the Caribbean islands. The ruffles made me think of the beautiful costumes. If you look closely, you will see some of the irridescent sequins that you might find on those costumes.

This page is for April and is called Tropic Carnival. I don't usually work with such a variety of hot colors, but it just seemed to call for it. It was a fun page to work on. Guess I'll have to start thinking about the next one. LOL.

April Sneek Peek

Here is a sneek peek at my April page for BJP. No, I am not a beading maniac (well, maybe I am). I have a perfectly good reason for beading ahead. I'm hoping to get a kit for this year's BFAC (Beading for a Cure). I figure if I can get the kit, finish it and send it off right away, then I can't lose it like I did last year. Duh! Wouldn't you think I would quit putting things in a "safe" place?

This page is totally unusual for me. I hadn't a clue what I was going to do when I started it. If you look back at most of my beading, I don't use a great number of colors in one piece. This one has everything but the kitchen sink thrown in. Think tropical; think fiesta; think Jamaica, etc. HOT colors!!! I'm having great fun with it. More when it is finished.

I spent the weekend being pea green with envy as one of my best friends was at the coast with her husband. I am craving to get to the ocean. I feel like a lemming! Don't get me wrong. I don't begrudge them their anniversary trip, but they wouldn't take me. Can you believe that????? I promised I would leave them alone. All kidding aside, I hope to get to the ocean soon. It seems to renew my soul. Does that make sense to anyone?

Starry, Starry Night- March

This is my March page for the Bead Journal Project. I know, I know. I've been a little obsessive since I started the first of the month. I freely admit it. I figure I might as well bead while I can. Who knows what will happen later. I might lose my muse again. I sure hope not. That is not fun!

I bought the gemstone bead while I was in Tahoe last October. Beki had way too good a selection so I indulged myself. This stone reminded me of the night sky. As I was working on it, I kept thinking of Van Gogh"s painting "Starry, Starry Night". I realized I was beading in circles just like the painting. I remember now why I don't usually bead in all dark beads. Even with good light, it can be difficult. I'm not sure if I will continue to encrust my pages for the whole year, but it has been intensely satisfying to work on these first three pages.

California has been inundated with rain and snow this past week. I don't want to complain as we need it so desperately. We've had some real gully washers, tornado warnings, hail, landslides, etc for a week now. Yesterday was bright and sunny and today started out that way too. However, we are supposed to get more rain tonite and several days this week. I just hope it can soak in so it doesn't cause more damage. Of course the ski parks are loving it. One of them got 9 feet of snow this week. Brrr!

Pathway To My Heart

I seem to be on a roll. This is my February BJP page. I call it "Pathway to My Heart." The heart in the center is a button. I fell in love with it and just had to use it for this page. These are some of my favorite colors to work with. They just seem to speak to me. I have selected my colors for the March page already. Won't tell what they are yet. A girl has to have some secrets. LOL.

Took a class yesterday from Leslie Frazier. It was great fun. The necklace has a focal of three oak leaves with acorns on a herringbone spiral cord. Very yummy! I feel so fortunate to be able to bead with such a great group of friends. We know each other very well and have lots of fun together.

Winter Storm

Well, I finished it. These are not my favorite colors to work with, but our recent weather seemed to call for it. Makes me cold just looking at it. Brrrr! I promise the rest of my pages will be more cheerful. I already have ideas for next month, but I have a few special projects to do before I can start it.

We are doing inventory at our LBS where I volunteer. Not sure I would do it if it weren't beads. LOL. I remember when we moved the shop to its present location, about five years ago. Trust me, you don't ever want to do that. We only moved diagonally across an intersection. My fellow teachers threatened to put me in a shopping cart with my arms out to hold bead strands. The mental picture is hilarious! I told them they would have to get the fire department to use the jaws of life to get me out. Needless to say, we found another way.

Just a Tease

Thought I would blog just a teaser of my January BJP page. I really like the 3x5 size I chose for this year. It's easier to hold in my hand to work on, and still gives me room to play with different ideas. My focus this year is on color. I want to climb out of my box a bit and try some new color combinations. In deference to the cold, windy weather much of the country is experiencing right now, I chose to start the year with white and silver. Hopefully, I will become a little more imaginative as the months go by. I am so pleased that two of my best friends from here are joining me in the adventure this year. I know it will make it even more fun.

Goodbye 2009

Can you believe this year is over as of today? In many ways it has been a good year: Sharing with friends and family, going to Retreats and bead shows, and beading.
Unfortunately, it has also been a sad year. Losing family members and friends is always sad. This post is dedicated to those who no longer walk beside us. This piece of bead embroidery has been done since Christmas. I've spent so much time thinking of my friend, Lora, and her fight to overcome Inflammatory Breast Cancer that I decided to call this piece "Lora's Song". She was a friend to many and always positive and upbeat. She will be missed.

I have a good feeling about 2010. I think it will be a creative, productive year for all of us. Tomorrow we start our third year of the Bead Journal Project. What a blessing that has turned out to be for many of us. Robin Atkins has touched so many people with this project and continues to do so.

May all of you have a wonderful New Year, and may you love, laugh and be happy for all your days. Be safe this holiday and be creative, no matter what your chosen medium.

Wish It Were Snowing

Merry Christmas everyone!

These pictures were taken in Tahoe during our Retreat there in October. Sure wish it would snow just this much here in Fresno/Clovis for the holidays. Not bad to drive in, yet beautiful to look at. We have received a good bit of rain, but it's not the same. Guess I should be thankful for the rain. We needed it soooo much.

I'm sitting here listening to Christmas carols and thinking of all of you. For you, I wish a happy, joyful holiday. May you have all your wishes come true and may you enjoy your families in this Blessed season.

I will be spending my Christmas with my family and friends. I am blessed to have them so close by me. Every time I look at my grandsons, they have grown another inch. They are 20, 16, and 10 years old. I am so proud of all three.

I am also fortunate to have a wonderful beady family here. They are my sisters of the heart. Then there are all of you, who I know from the Internet. I've been lucky enough to meet many of you in person and it's as if I have known you all my life. How blessed I am.

Printer is fixed!

Hurrah! I now have a new printer. Once again, I can share pictures. These are two of my favorites from the Tahoe Retreat. Dustin and Beki look like they are having a giggle, don't they? Nikki, Dustin, Sherry and Marcia always add to the fun of a party.

It seems like I have been doing a lot of everything but beading lately. I know I've been buying beads like I was running out of them at home. NOT!

I am working on a new bracelet design right now. Of course, it is bead embroidery, but is not a cuff. I hope to have some pics of it soon.

Is everyone ready for Christmas? For a change, I have most of my shopping done. I started back in September. This is something I never do. I am a world class procrastinator and usually am scrambling to finish at the last minute. I am actually looking forward to the holidays this year, which is something I can't always say.

Happy Thanksgiving to all

I wanted to wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you are able to spend it with family and friends. May this holiday find you all well and happy.

A fervent thank you to all our troops for your sacrifices being away from your families and loved ones at this time. You are all in my prayers.

As you can tell, I haven't fixed the picture problem yet, but it will be done soon. My tech support grandson will look at it this weekend for me.

It's been a busy late Summer and Fall for me. We had our local Bead Show in September. Several of us immediately went to Tahoe for a Retreat. What a ball that was! We took three great classes from Beki Haley, Marcia DeCoster and Sherry Serafini. Just as soon as we returned to Clovis, we had a maraton weekend of classes through our Bead Society and our local bead store, Beads, Etc. in Clovis. We topped that off two weeks later with a class from Leslie Frazier. That just about classed me out. LOL. I have way too many patterns running around in my head right now.

We changed our annual trek to the BABE(Bay Area Bead Extravaganza) Show. Instead of going for several days, we took the train up for just one day. Seemed kind of strange to not be staying at the hotel this year, but there is always next year. It sure didn't stop us from shopping! I have been working at our LBS three days a week and teaching classes as needed. I just got permission from the owner to set up an area focused on Bead Embroidery. Just ask me how jazzed I am about that!!!

Two Things

I want to smile every time I think about this last weekend. We returned last evening from the Bead Unique Tahoe Retreat totally exhausted, but replete in all the beadiness we were able to indulge in all weekend. Great classes by even greater teachers made each day a delight. Often, after taking a class, I will neglect to finish the project due to disinterest after learning the technique. Not this time! All three classes were totally interesting and will be finished ASAP. I plan to wear them all proudly.

The staff who planned and executed the retreat are to be commended for their diligence and unfailing good grace. They were cheerful and helpful in all ways. There were so many sponsors it would be impossible to name them all. To say a mere thank you is not enough. We all received a goodie bag filled with beads, tools and patterns and I, personally plan to make good use of them. Then to provide snow was a bonus we hadn't anticipated. How nice of you. It was a beautiful venue and endlessly entertaining.

Of course, no thank you would be complete without mentioning Pam, Beki and Shawn. Pam, I know you and Beki worked unceasingly to provide us with the ultimate in retreats. You succeeded very well. Beki, thank you for sharing your beloved Shawn with all of us. I don't know what we would have done without him. It was so nice to touch bases with Russell again and to get to know Joanna and all the rest of the retreat planners. You all gave us a rare treat and deserve our thanks.

While at the retreat, I was able to share with others about one of my other passions. The Bead
Journal Project. I've been a part of it for two years now and have signed up for a third year. It is such a fun way to share with others and make them a part of your life. Robin Atkins started it in 2007 to encourage beaders to share their feelings and work with others. I hope she knows how much good it has been for so many of us. I can't encourage you enough to look into joining us in January. Go to: Beadjournalproject.com. to learn about it and sign up for next year. Whether you are a beginning beader or an expert, there is something for all in the BJP.

Kit Work

These four pictures are the pieces I did from our Bead Society kit this year. There were many beautiful and diverse art pieces made from this kit. Of course, the colors were right up my alley.

This first piece had an odd shaped donut that cried out for fringe. Did I ever tell you I hate fringe? It never seems to lay right for me. Oh well.
This necklace includes three lampwork discs made by one of our local bead makers, Vicki Cedarquist. I love using them in my work.
This piece is one of my "hats". Apparently, viewed from the top, it looks like an old fashioned decorated hat. I must be getting in a rut as several people have made the same comment about some of my pin/pendants.
You can never go wrong making a freeform peyote bracelet from a kit. There are always lots of options for embellishments.

It's been a busy week for me. I helped our LBS owner, Becky, in her booth at the Woman's Conference on Tuesday last. It was tiring, but fun. Robin Roberts from Good Morning America was an inspiring speaker. We were able to talk to hundreds of women about the shop and how much fun beading is.

The above pieces were displayed at our annual CCBS Bead Show on Sunday along with those of other members. It was a nice display and will be at our County Fair in October as well.

A week from tomorrow we leave for the Bead Unique Bead Retreat in Tahoe. I'm really getting excited about it. I need to get Marcia's book out and brush up on RAW. I do use it often, but practice never hurts. Beki Haley's class will give me a really blingy necklace when finished. Hope it goes with my jeans and teeshirts. LOL. I know I will get a lot from Sherry's class. I feel like my work is a bit static right now and I'm hoping she can give me some suggestions to improve it.

I took some pictures at our show and of some of my newer works, but Picasa is being stubborn today and won't take them. I'll try again later. Have a great beady day!

Swap Pins

Here are two of the pins I will swap while in Tahoe for the Bead Unique Retreat. It's getting closer all the time and we are all getting excited about our trip. There are six of us coming from the Fresno/Clovis area. We'll be sharing a two bedroom suite and even have a full kitchen. All reports state the Retreat site is beautiful and will be perfect for our purposes. I still have to finish my UGLY project but it is coming along nicely. Have to make a run to Michael's before I can finish it. I can't wait to see everyone else's work.

I have admired the work of many of the attendees for years. It will be such fun to finally meet them all and be able to exchange ideas and techniques. The Internet made it possible for so many of us to get to know one another over the years. Now BU has made it possible for us to get together in person. The classes scheduled should be loads of fun.

I'd best get back to work now. Have lots to do for our Women's Conference on Tuesday and then our CCBS Bead Show on Sunday. Then only 10 days until we go to Tahoe.

Last Two BJP Pages

Finished on time! Yay! Talk about leaving it until the last minute. This first page is called Summer Flair. I got the fabric in a scrap bag a couple of years ago and couldn't resist using for my July page. It's a flannel fabric, but just seemed to be perfect for a velvety summer night sky. Following through on using texture, it was fun finding the right beads to show off the flaring fireworks.
My last page comes from a class I recently took from Annie Hesse. She came to our LBS to teach a doll class. Once started, it was difficult to put the face down until it was finished. I just had to show her off on my August page. Annie's class was pure, unadulterated fun. She is funny and knowledgeable and oh so patient. She is a doll herself. I call this page Bad Hair Day. LOL

This ends the BJP for this year, but you can bet I will be signing up for another year come October 1st. Knowing I have this project ongoing all year keeps me focused. I can plan my other projects around it and make better use of my time. Part of me wants to change sizes for this next year, but then again, I do like working in the 4x6" size. Not sure what I will do yet. Lots of time to make up my mind.

I have been busy getting ready for our annual Bead Show here in Fresno. We will have 30 vendors this year. It will be held on September 20th, a Sunday. If anyone wants directions, let me know. It's always lots of work, but lots of fun too.

Almost immediately after the show, six of us from here will head for Tahoe and the Bead Unique Retreat. Can't wait! I'll finally have a chance to meet some of my online friends in person. Lots of swaps, and interesting projects to finish before then. One of them is an Ugly Beaded Object. Have you ever tried to make something ugly on purpose? Not as easy as one might think.

One more done! I was given this beautiful example of polymer clay work a couple of years ago. I could never decide exactly what to do with it. It just seemed to fit a June wedding theme. The background fabric is a lovely piece of silk I had in my stash. I love the color combinations in the clay. It made choosing colors for the page very easy. Once again, texture is all. I have July's page almost done as well. I'll post it when it's finished. You never know, I just may get done on time after all.

This is my May BJP page. It's called "Friends". I found these wonderful gemstone faces online and knew I had to do something with them. They represent my beady friends who have become my family. I have been trying to add more texture to my pages this year. Small keishi pearls and gemstone chips have added a new dimension I think. I can't believe we are so close to the end of the year. I still have three pages to do, but expect to be done soon. I had to get some "real life" things out of my way so I could concentrate on my pages.
This cuff was inspired by the beautiful cabs I bought recently in San Mateo. I love turquoise and copper together. I enjoy making cuffs so much I am toying with the idea of doing them for BJP next year. Kelly's beautiful cuffs have made me want more of them.

Celebrate our Youth

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Being the patriotic soul that I am, this has always been a favorite holiday for me. Many years ago, I was married to an Army Officer. I got first-hand experience with wondering if my husband would make it home safely from Viet Nam. I can surely appreciate the angst families go through when their young people are in a war zone. These young men and women sacrifice their all to keep us a free nation.

It behooves us to think often and long about these young people who guard our freedom. Where would we be without their sacrifices? They fought for us at Pearl Harbor, on the beaches of Normandy, in the jungles of Viet Nam and now in the desert sands. They give their lives that we may live in freedom.

When you see a young man or woman in uniform, say thank you. Thank you for standing between us and the possibility of tyrannical dictators who have no concern for human life. Thank you for allowing us to vote for our leaders and to change that vote when necessary.

You are the lifeblood of our nation. Without you, we couldn't survive. Bless you and your families who give so much.

Just Coasting Lately

I have just been coasting for the past month or so. I have little motivation to do anything. I'm hoping it's just an accumulation of sad events that have happened recently. We had an unexpected death in the family, one of my best friends was seriously ill and I received bad news from another relative. This all happened within a two week period. I'm not sitting around crying or anything, but find myself strangely apathetic. I'm finding it difficult to stick to any one thing long enough to finish it.
I find myself doing things that are relatively mindless, such as making 52 pair of earrings, and spending my time tagging things for our LBS, etc. I'm being productive, but not creative, if you know what I mean. I need a jump start to get my engine running full speed again. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can think of all kinds of things I want to do, but starting them is something else again.

April BJP and Extras

One more page done! This is my April page and it's called "Awakening" The inspiration for this page is a raku bead by RAMA. With her soft leaves just unfurling, it seemed the perfect focal for April. Of course, here in the West, the heat has come on with a bang this year, while other parts of the country are still almost in winter. My background fabric is a batik of frangiapani. I have been trying to do some new (to me) techniques this year instead of covering every inch of fabric with beads. Sometimes, it's harder this way.

Since I blogged last, I've been staying busy. Had a ball doing a Car Show here in Clovis. Sold a little bit, but was able to advertise for our LBS classes, so it was a good day. The best part, is that it was a benefit for the Shriner's. These folks do so much good for children who are ill. I hope I can always lend my time to projects like this.

I fell in love with these heart beads by Grace Ma . They lend themselves to being used as charms on a simple spiral bracelet. Grace's lampwork beads work well in bead embroidery projects as well as focals in other jewelry projects.

Spring Pond

Is it raining where you live? We just got a storm in from the coast and the rain is pouring, the eves are dripping on the patio and I wish I had a fire going. It's not cold, but a fire would be cozy, don't you think? I know we need the rain as much as ever. If we're lucky we may get some snow in the higher elevations. That would be even better. I know we sure don't want another fire season like last year.

This page is called Spring Pond. It's my March page for BJP. I found the cute bone carvings at BABE this past November and couldn't resist them. Of course I had no idea what I would do with them, but when has that ever mattered? Now I'm only one month behind. Yay for me!

What are all of you working on right now? Besides my BJP pages, I continue to work on my BFAC project. A friend of mine asked the other day if I was ever going to do anything but bead embroidery again. It made me laugh. I still do a fair amount of beadweaving and of course, I am still teaching both at Beads,Etc. in Clovis. I can't help it if the embroidery calls to me. I get a tremendous sense of satisfaction out of finishing each piece.

I am officially signed up for the Retreat at Tahoe. I can't wait. Several of us from here are planning to go. I've taken Marcia DeCoster's classes before and they are a treat! She makes even RAW fun. I know I will enjoy Beki Haley's class as well. Her work is always so meticulous. For me though, the big draw this trip will be Sherry Serefini's class. I have admired her work for years and never thought I would be lucky enough to take one of her classes. I will be in heaven for sure. LOL

January and February BJP

I am slowly, but surely catching up with my BJP pages. This first one is for February. I loved the plummy colors in the batik fabric and found a bead from Grace Ma that fit perfectly. This page kind of symbolizes a new growth to me. Seeds are planted and lo and behold we see the flowers starting to appear. I've been experimenting this year, trying to get out of the habit of totally encrusting my pages. Sometimes that is difficult for me. I have a tendency to think more beads is always better. I'm trying to break that habit. Of course, working with focals such as this one is such a pleasure. Grace's beads are exquisite.

This page is for January. It is called Shadow of Winter. The focal face cabochon is by Klew. The swirled lampwork bead is by Vicki Cedarquist who belongs to our Central California Bead Society and always participates in our CCBS Bead Show each September. I love the subtle color changes in this batik and it was so perfect for this face cab.

Eventually I will get caught up with my pages. I 'm currently working on March and am already thinking about April's page. Procrastination is one of my most prolific habits and I do it very well. I continue to work on my BFAC project for this year.

I am finally beginning to see progress in my goal to spread the joy of bead embroidery. This week has been very special in that I have had some of my students bring me finished or nearly finished works of their art. I'm so pleased to see that they have enjoyed working on them. Some of them even plan to do more. This makes teaching worthwhile.

New Items

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Artbeads.com to use and evaluate a new product for them. I chose this decorative bead. It is an onyx bead with a painted decal on it. I loved the design immediately. As I do predominately bead embroidery these days, it was important to me to have a focal that would compliment my work. This bead lived up to my expectations. The intricate design made it easy to choose colors for my work. My piece is a pin/pendant which makes it more versatile in your jewelry wardrobe. A New Era

Well, I officially consider myself a Senior Citizen now. I turned 66 years old today. This past year and a half has been a real experience for me. I retired from nursing and have had to discover a whole new way of living. Some of it has not been fun, but the majority of it has been a blast. Initially, I learned that I can exist on a very tight budget. Fortunately for me, I don't have to do that. Once I got myself and my finances organized, I'm in much better shape than I thought I would be. Just knowing that has made the past year more enjoyable.

What am I doing with myself? I volunteer at our local bead store which is owned by one of my dearest friends. I work 2-3 days a week for her and love doing it. I teach, run the register occasionally and help the customers. What a joy it is to share my love of beading with others. Each day is a new experience. We have everything from new beaders, to fishermen making lures coming in on a regular basis. What fun it is to talk to them and learn about their beading experiences.

When I'm not at the shop, I bead and read a lot. Both things bring me enjoyment. While I do beadweaving and teach the same, my obsession is bead embroidery. From the moment I learned to sew beads on a piece of fabric, I was hooked. Having such bead embroiderers as Robin Atkins, Larkin Van Horn and Sherry Serefini to emulate is wonderful. Through them and blogging, I have met so many wonderful beaders and learned so much from each of them. I love the work of my fellow Bead Journal Project beaders. I've discovered how to put myself into my bead work and find that very satisfying. I can always tell when my emotions are not involved in my work. It is usually very pedestrian and I find I don't enjoy working on it nearly as much.

One of the things I have enjoyed most lately is corresponding with the friends I have made online. It's great to learn more about each of them and share beading stories. Sometimes they make me laugh and sometimes they make me cry, but I wouldn't trade these friends for anything. Each one of them adds joy to my life. You can't ask for better than that.

Rainbow Gold

Had to take a few minutes to post my March doll for BAD. She is called "Rainbow Gold". I do enjoy making these little dolls. I love trying to make each one different.
I've been busy this month except for last week. I fell victim to the dreaded flu bug. Much better now except for my voice and cough. At least I feel like I will live. LOL. I discovered one bad thing about being home everyday. It leaves you way too much time to play and buy on the internet. My poor bank balance will never be the same. I continue to add to my faceted gemstone collection. I'm learning a lot and really enjoying the collection.
I worked Monday and Wednesday at our LBS. Today I was doing my civic duty on jury duty. It's not always fun, but is necessary. Looks like I will spend tomorrow there as well. (Sigh!) Saturday looks to be fun though. Our local Bead Society is having their annual potluck and sale. It's not really a bead show as such, but a way for us to sell off unwanted beads and finished jewelry. I love this sale as I always find something I want or need. And just think! It was in a friend's stash all along.
I'm working hard on my BFAC project for 2010. The kit this year is wonderful and includes a beautiful lampwork bead. I'll take some progress pics soon and post them. I love working on projects like this. There is always the challenge of working with beads that I didn't select and knowing the profits go to a worthy cause such as Colorectal Cancer Research makes it that much better. Better late, than never. I have become a behinder this year.
This first page is for November. It was inspired by the historic election that took place in November. I have always been proud to be an American, but never more so than now. To see our country rally and stand behind a man of vision, no matter the color of his skin was wondrous to behold. I'm not a particularly political person, but it did my heart good to see the USA step out of a dark part of our past, and embrace the future together.

The second page is for December. This has always been a month for reflection for me; looking back over the past year and learning from it. I have officially been retired for a year now. My life is good. I have a loving family, the best of friends and last, but not least, my beady family. What more could a person ask?

Now on to my January, February and March pages.

Busy Month so far

Have I been on a spiral kick? You bet I have. Just can't seem to get enough of them all of a sudden. I also have one with pearls that I don't have a picture of yet.

The top three are bracelets I made with crystals.

The necklace is made with turquoise chips. I love the organic look.

This last piece is one I made after taking a class with Kandra of Kandra's Beads. She has been a guest teacher at our LBS, Beads, Etc. in Clovis several times now. Her classes are always interesting and fun.

I am trying to catch up on all my projects, but am spending three days a week at Beads, Etc. now. I have way too much fun there playing with beads and meeting so many interesting people. I continue to teach there as often as possible. I find that every class I teach, I learn something new as well. I feel very fortunate to have a group of beady friends that have become more like family to me. We share not only beading, but our daily lives. What a wonderful sisterhood.

My friend called me last week and invited me to a bead session at her house. Three of us had dinner and beaded for hours. I spent the night at her place and we beaded until after 3am. Was I tired? Of course. Was it worth it? Way beyond worth it. I'm inspired by the interaction of our group and the constant bombardment of ideas when we get together. Who could ask for more?

I am finding it great fun to come up with different designs each month using the same doll pattern. I wear them frequently as pendants, but they can also be worn as pins.

I went on a face making kick recently. I supply faces for my LBS, Beads, Etc. in Clovis, CA. The owner of the shop has made it into a fun, comfortable place to shop, learn and bead. She is always bringing something new for us. Her regular customers and teachers have become more like a family and frequently just go to the shop to hang out and bead.

The second picture is of a piece I did in a class by Kandra of Kandra's Beads. She brings an energy and enthusiasm to her classes that make them lots of fun. Even those beaders who had never done bead embroidery before produced spectacular results. We all immediately started thinking about doing another piece.

Other than that, I have been continuing to work on more pendants and have plans for a collar soon. I just finished teaching a class on brooches for our local Bead Society. It was a blast! We had 25 women beading like crazy. We'll all turn in our brooches for a Challenge next month. I continue to teach various classes at Beads, Etc. as well.

Old Year, New Works

As the old year is fading out, I have managed to stay busy beading. The first picture is a pin/pendant I made with a polymer clay face. I love the colors. The second picture is also a pin/pendant of a fossilized stone. It is unusual for me to work in this colorway, but it was a challenge I set for myself.

I hope everyone had as wonderful a Christmas as I did. Our family gets together on Christmas Eve to visit and open packages. I received many of the things I had asked Santa for. I am a big Il Divo fan and received their new CD. I also received an 8GB flash drive for my laptop. More than the gifts I received, I was able to spend some quality time with my grandsons. As they get older, it's harder to catch them all in one place. They are 10, 15, and 19 now. Such handsome boys. Of course that could just be Grandma talking, but I don't think so.

I have been thinking a lot about what I want from this coming year. As an ex-military wife, I wish for peace all over the world, so our men and women can safely return home to their families. They sacrifice so much to keep us safe.

I wish for good health for my family and friends. Too many of them have serious health problems. I complain about my little aches and pains, but I have to remind myself, there are many with much more serious things happening in their lives.

I wish for many beads and projects for my beady friends. I know the joy I get from beading and I wish that same joy for all of you.

May the New Year find you all happy and healthy.

Holiday Season

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, I wish you all a happy holiday season. I count my many blessings regularly, but especially so this holy time of year. I have a wonderful extended family and my three grandsons are the joy of my life. They are 19, 15, and 10 now and growing up way too fast to suit Grandma. It is a pleasure to watch them grow and develop their own separate personalities. I'm very proud of all three.

Fortunate woman that I am, I have my beady family also. There is a group of about a dozen of us that hang out and teach at our LBS. They have become my sisters in truth. We laugh and cry together, bead together and travel together. How blessed I am to have these women in my life.

Lest I forget, I also have my online friends. It is a treat to exchange ideas and patterns with this knowledgeable group of beaders and crafters.

Christmas Starr

This is a picture of my December doll for Beaded Art Dolls Calendar Challenge. Her name is Christmas Starr. She is the fourth in a series of twelve dolls I am making for the challenge.
I have continued to bead daily for the past two weeks. I borrowed my friend Lynn's NCIS DVDs for the first four seasons. I put those on and had a veritable orgy of NCIS and beading. LOL I have made over twenty pin/pendants in that time. Most of them are going for Christmas gifts, but some I am keeping for myself. I really enjoy threading a chain through them to wear as pendants. Next, I am going to do much the same with stone donuts.
I am a bit behind in the BJP right now, but I will catch up when the mood strikes me. Right now, all I want to do are the pendants. Soooo....

Been a little busy

I've been mostly lurking on my groups this past week. Not much work on the computer. This picture shows what I have been doing. I am absolutely fascinated by these little artworks. They take relatively little time to make and can be enjoyed by wearing them as a pin or as a pendant. The fun part is I get to teach how to make them for my Bead Society in January and then we will have a challenge. However, they tell me I can't be in it. Not fair I say! Actually, I don't mind. My goal this year is to show as many people as possible the joys of bead embroidery.
I actually have created a monster. I showed a friend how to do the stitches and she has just finished her second piece. Both her cuff and the necklace frontpiece are gorgeous! She definitely has an eye for color combinations and her beading is exquisite. Can't ask for a better student than that.
Guess I'd best get back to beading. Have lots of Christmas presents to make yet.

A Day of Sharing of Words

I hear a soft whisper of sound
That repeats itself endlessly.
The wet sand is firm,
But my footprints soon disappear,
Fading into nothingness.
Down the shore, the sandpipers step quietly
Looking for food.
A wave comes in, frothy with white foam.
As it sneaks back into the ocean,
It leaves half buried bits of pearlized treasures.
A distant headland juts out into deep water, impossibly blue.
As a soft breeze drifts through the cypress trees,
My soul rests.

New Goodies from BABE

These are a few of the new goodies I brought back from my trip to Oakland and the BABE show. It was a great show; 30 more vendors than last year. What was nice is they opened up a larger area so it wasn't crowded. Of course, these stone cabs are marvelous and I can't wait to use them. I found a wonderful variety of stones this year. In the second picture are lampwork beads by Grace Ma. In addition to being exquisite, they are flat on the back and perfect for bead embroidery. Wish I could have bought more. Of course I bought the requisite seed beads by the tube-ful. I found wonderful mixes at Whim and Glass Garden and I surprised myself when I bought so many neutrals this time. I also bought a ton of vintage at Empyrean Beads.

My classes were terrific. I took an all day class from Christi Friesen working on necklace components. I always learn so much from her and we laughed all day long. I also took a Jewelry Photography class that was so interesting that even though I promised myself I wouldn't buy a Cloud Dome, I did anyway. So much for will power.

Several of us got together for dinner on Thursday evening before the show. We had lots of giggles and fun catching up with each other's lives.

When I got home, I found several packages waiting for me, too. Things I had ordered before the show. Lots of nailheads and other new beads. I also received some great face molds from Sweetbriar. Can't wait to get the clay out and play.

One of the nicest things to happen at BABE is that I was able to finally meet my friend Doris in person. We met online and have corresponded for the better part of a year now. We were able to have lunch and get to know each other better.

October Fire is Finished

I finished Fire last night except for the edge and that is started already. This was a particularly satisfying page to work on. I love the outdoors and dread the coming of fire season every year. Too many trees are lost to carelessness and the loss of homes and lives is tremendous. Thousands of people's lives are changed within hours when one of these firestorms starts. This past year has been particularly bad in California with all the lightning fires. Our firefighters are overworked and exhausted, but they continue to forge ahead with each new fire that starts. Just when the summer fire season is over, the Santa Ana winds start in southern California and we are off again. This page is meant to represent the tragic losses suffered due to fire.

Here is the third in progress picture of my October page. As you can see, the fire is larger and consuming the tree on the right. The cabin is half finished now. I used some clear plastic with orange marker on the back for the windows so they would seem to reflect the fire. More on this page when it is finished.

This is my October BJP page in progress. I found the fabric in my stash of batiks. After the summer spent watching all the fires in California, I knew I had to do this page. Once again, in October, the fires started. What better time?

This is one of the few pages I do each year that I actually have a plan for. As you can see, the A-frame cabin is in danger. I love the skeletonized trees in this fabric. and the orange patch as well.
The trees have been fleshed out a bit here in the second shot and the fire has started. It's pretty amazing that as I bead this page, it actually feels like the fire is growing and destroying the trees. I haven't decided exactly what to do with the cabin yet.

The fires have devastated our beautiful state this year. As more people build out into the wilderness, I'm afraid it will only get worse. Most of these fires were started by lighting, but unfortunately many were started by man. It's sad that more do not care that they cause great loss of property and life by their carelessness and deliberate acts.

I will post another picture of this page, as it disappeared from this blog.

Relaxation Time

Just got back from a relaxing two days at the coast. I went with my friend, Heidi. She took this pic of me in front of Morro Rock. We did a little bead shopping in San Luis Obispo, picked up my GS and went to Morro Bay for an early dinner on the wharf. It's always a treat to
spend time with my GS. He goes to college in San Luis Obispo.

We had a leisurely drive back to Cambria and got back just in time to take this picture from in front of our motel. It was wonderful listening to the surf all night. We spent most of our time beading. I taught her how to do bead embroidery and to do peyote stitch around a cabochon. She caught on very quickly and had finished a bead embroidered cab pin/pendant by Saturday.

My project for the week was my November doll for Beaded Art Dolls. She is called Cranberry Crush. I was also able to get some work done on my October page for the Bead Journal Project. It is going well so far, and I will post it soon.

New Pin/Pendants

Beaded my little fingers off yesterday! Really made some productive use of my time for a change. These pin/pendants were made primarily for a challenge/swap on BeadDreamz on Yahoo. I love the flexibility of doing these. They are small enough to wear as a pin, but large enough to wear as a pendant. I put a finding on the back which will allow both. Like most of my bead embroidery, I never know exactly what it will look like when I'm finished with it. The top picture is called Desert Sun and the bottom one is called Earth. Not sure what the stone is on that one, but it reminded me of the earth from space, thus the name.

Plans are ongoing for my trip to the coast next week. We are staying for two nights so should have lots of beading time. The weather should be in the 60's; nice and crisp. Great walking weather. We plan to hit the boardwalk on Moonstone Beach for a walk. I may even get some pictures taken this trip. I'm taking several projects with me and I will be teaching my friend, Heidi, how to do bead embroidery. Should be lots of fun.

The first week in November is the BABE show(BayAreaBeadExtravaganza) in Oakland. I'm spending five days up there this year. Taking classes, shopping, visiting with friends, making new ones and just generally having a good time. Can't wait!

September Finished

Finally finished my September BJP page. Not much beading here, I know, but that's how September was for me. I had almost totally lost my muse. This page will be officially called "Lost Muse". Fortunately, I seem to have found her again. I think I was falling into bad habits. When you have all day to work on things, it's too easy to say "I'll do it later". After a while, that nasty little habit snowballed and I found myself either reading or playing on the computer. All day, every day. Not a good thing when you want to accomplish things.

Now, I do most of my computer work in the early mornings and won't let myself pick up a book until after 4 pm. At least this way, I get some beading done everyday. Still haven't figured out how to get myself to do house****. LOL

Took two marvelous classes from Liz Smith this past weekend. Her enthusiasm and energy was definitely contagious. We did her Twist and Swirl class on Saturday and her No Calorie Donut on Sunday. Both classes were fun and kept your interest throughout. Those are two projects which will be finished ASAP.

Swirling Leaves

This is my October doll for BAD. We have agreed to do a doll a month for the next year. Not too bad a deal until you mixed it with BJP and Beaddreamz various challenges as well. Oh well, it's only time and beads. LOL
In truth, I love having all the different projects going on at the same time. It keeps the creative juices flowing. I always did work better under a deadline. Not for me the ordered existence of doing one project at a time and finishing it before starting the next one. Now I just have to come up with some new classes for the LBS. Maybe I will do a class in doll pins. Hmmm. In January, I'm teaching a beaded brooch class for our Bead Society. That should be fun. We have some very talented ladies in our group.
Off to the County Fair tonite. Our Bead Society has a display in the Gem and Mineral Bldg. All of our pieces use gemstones of some kind. It looks really nice. Get to see Gretchen Wilson tonite. Sure hope it doesn't rain. The weather has done a 180 turnaround in the last 24 hours. It was up in the high 90's yesterday and today our high is supposed to be 70. Should be comfortable walking weather for ambling around the fairgrounds.

Grape Day

As many of you may know, the San Joaquin Valley in California is known for it's wonderful table grapes, as well as wine grapes and those dried for raisins. This is my September doll for the Beaded Art Dolls Calendar Challenge. She was fun to do and went together really fast. I made her this afternoon. I put a pin/pendant clasp on her so I can wear her either way. Only eleven more to go this year. LOL

I am slowly catching up with all my WIP's. I hate it when I get in a slump. All I wanted to do was read or play on the computer. At least I'm getting back in gear now. Won't let myself pick up a book until after 4 pm. I am determined to catch up and stay that way.

Lots going on this next week or two. Going to see Gretchen Wilson Friday at our County Fair. Saturday and Sunday are two classes with Liz Smith with our Bead Society. Should be great fun. Then next Friday (10th) I'm going to see Randy Travis (also at the Fair).

BABE is getting closer all the time. I love going to Oakland for BABE. I get to see friends that I don't see but a couple of times a year, and if I'm lucky, I get to meet other online friends for the first time. I enjoy visiting with vendors who come every year and of course, checking out all the goodies. I might just buy a few too. LOL

Went on a Binge!

I was a bad girl last week. Not really.

Last Thursday my friend, Lynn, and I went to the coast to relax and take a class. On Friday, we picked up my oldest GS, David, and went to Grover Beach and Pismo for the day. We shopped for beads (of course) and books and then went to dinner. Yum! On Saturday, we took a class from Teri Dannenburg at Naturally Jennifer's bead store in San Luis Obispo. We learned how to make a bracelet called Acropora (a type of coral). It's very organic looking. Did more bead shopping! We had to leave for home right after the class so we would be ready for the CCBS Annual Bead Show on Sunday. Did I buy more beads? You betcha! The top picture is my stash for the three days shopping. The bottom picture is just the seed beads I bought. Did I need more beads? Nope! Did I want more beads? Well, of course! Our show is not too large; about 30 vendors this year. However, we always have fun.

I also splurged on a new 19" monitor for my computer and if that wasn't enough, I bought a small laptop that only weighs 3.2 lbs. Can you tell I finally received my retroactive retirement check from the County? After buying clothes and paying bills, I even have a bunch of money left. It's going to stay in the bank, too. I've had my spending spree and I am a happy girl.

I'm finally getting back into the swing of beading. I was in a funk for a couple of weeks, but I'm gathering up steam to meet all the obligations I've signed up to do. It feels good to know I can do all these things without having to worry about finances anymore.

Where were you?
There are two times in my life that I will always remember; when JFK was shot and 9/11. I know there have been many tragic events in my lifetime, but those two struck a chord within me.
How sad it is for our whole nation and for the world, that there are people still in the world who have so little respect for life. There is no political regime or religion that can justify slaughter of this scope. There was no war; though war does not excuse the killing of innocents.
My heart hurts for those who lost loved ones in 9/11. It hurts for the rest of us who thought it could never happen here. It can, and it did.
I will never forget.

Splurge

I just was walking to the bank this morning. That's all. All of a sudden, I found myself in a nearby shop buying clothes. How did that happen? I haven't bought clothes in forever. I basically live in jeans and teeshirts. What a treat it was to just go in and pick out some new things. I still want to get some sweaters for this winter, but I'm pretty well set for tees now and I bought a couple of pair of jeans too.

If this sounds pretty mundane, consider I have been living on a very limited income for the past six months (Soc. Sec.). My county retirement just kicked in with a very nice retroactive check. Makes me feel rich. Not really, but it's nice to be off such a tight budget again.

I have signed up for BJP 2008 and am looking forward to a productive year. I am also in two other year long challenges, as well as a couple of swaps. Have I lost my mind? Probably, but I don't care; I'm having fun.

Okay. I'm jazzed! Received a phone call from a Tierracast Rep to get my okay to give me credit for another bracelet that is on their online catalog. Like I'm going to say no. Sure! I made this bracelet a few years ago using their product in return for a stash of their goodies. It can be found on the bracelet page of their Design Ideas. If you scan through the catalog you will also see the freeform peyote bracelet I made. It has been in the catalog for a couple of years now. I'm not sure exactly when my name will go on the Garden bracelet, but I was told it would be soon.

Finally finished my BFAC doll, "Fire Dancer" She goes off in the mail tomorrow. I'm rather sad to see her go even though I know she is going to the best of causes. Layne's Legacy or Beading for a Cure is a yearly auction that raises money for ColoRectal Cancer Research. I'm very proud to have been a part of it this year. Hopefully, she will raise a good amount of money for our cause.
This is the second soft cuff bracelet I've made. This one is for me. I love working in these colors as they have a rich, sumptuous look to them. I'm much happier with this one. I have several others planned already.

New Project

I am in total shock! I was contacted this morning by the company that sells this bag and others. They asked me to do a bead embroidery piece to be inserted into the clear pocket of the bag. They are sending me a bag just like this one. When I get the piece done, I'm to send it to them for photography and then they send it back for me to keep. It will be published on their website, put in news releases and perhaps even be offered to a magazine. I will get full credit for my design and be linked on their website as well. After several emails today, the bag is on its way to me.
This came right out of the blue. I have no idea where they even saw my work. I must have angels sending the word out for me. Amazing!

Latest Class Samples

This first picture is a a soft cuff I just finished as a class sample. Pastels are not really my thing, but the LBS owner wanted a summe bracelet, so this is what she got. It's done on EZFelt and backed with the same. There is no metal insert so it fits snug around the wrist. It's very comfortable and lightweight to wear.
I saw a picture in a book and modified it somewhat. I will be teaching this next month at our LBS. It's called Topaz Treasure.

I've been having fun coming up with new class ideas in between finishing my BFAC doll and several other projects.

Window to the Past

This is a window into our past. This picture was taken in a gold mining ghost town in the Eastern Sierras. It's name is Bodie. At one point in time, Bodie had a population of 10,000 people. Now it is run by the State of California as a park. It is kept in a state of "arrested decay". There are still many buildings standing, but you are able to enter very few of them. This is the General Store. The picture was taken through a dirty window.
There is a museum there with a myriad of items the miners used in their daily life. There was a bank, but all that is left of it is a wall and the old safe. There is a firehouse, a gas station, a mortuary, a schoolhouse and a church. Up on the hill above the town is the remnants of the old gold mine. They say there is still gold there, but it is too expensive to mine it.
At the edge of town is the cemetery. It has many fancy marble and granite head stones. Most of the inhabitants died very young. Outside the fence of the cemetery is a tall (5 ft?) obelisk with just the inscription " Rosa" on it. Rosa was a prostitute who helped nurse many of the miners when an epidemic hit. She is said to have saved many lives. However, due to her profession, she was not allowed to be buried in consecrated ground. I have been to Bodie many times and there are always flowers on her grave.
This is just a glimpse into the past of California. It is well worth visiting during the summer months. From mid-September to June the high mountain passes are usually snowed in. However, it can be reached easily from the Nevada side.

I was working nightshift as an RN at our County Jail. Worked with a great bunch of Officers! I still consider them some of my favorite people. I was into rubber stamping and just starting to take some bead classes. One of my favorite things to do was to take off by myself and drive up into the Eastern Sierras to do scenic photography. Another was watching my grandsons grow.

Bountiful Harvest

Well, today is the end of one of the most challenging years I have ever had. I finished my September page a couple of days ago. It was the last of twelve pages that I have worried about, prayed about, and worked my fingers (old though they may be) to the bone for. Actually, that is at least a partial untruth. This year has been heart wrenching at times, but I wouldn't have traded it for any amount of money. I feel like I have learned so much about beading, and more importantly, about myself. It has been a voyage of discovery indeed. The joy I have received from sharing such an experience with my fellow beaders and artists is unmeasureable. To thank Robin for starting this project somehow does not seem enough. If you multiply all my questions to her by 200+, it's a wonder she even had time to bead or write her book. The friendships formed during this year, I hope, will continue for a long time. I know I have become hopelessly addicted to reading blogs and will continue to do so. Thank all of your for sharing your knowledge with me.

UFO's Being Finished

I finally feel like I'm accomplishing something. I just finished my last BJP page and will post pics shortly. I also finished my BFAC doll yesterday. I just have to take pictures and send her off in the mail. I have a feeling that is going to be a little difficult for me. It's like letting your child go off to school for the first time.

I had no idea when I started the Bead Journal Project a year ago, what an impact it would have on my life. In many ways it changed how I think about my art. I love bead embroidery and I am constantly trying to think of new ways to use it. I also hope to incorporate more things into my BJP pages in the next year. I want to explore using different fabrics, papers, etc in my work. I also want to add some polymer clay and found objects.

All in all, I'm a very happy camper these days.

Big Sur Coastline in California

This is a picture I took some years ago along the Big Sur coastline of Central California. The rugged cliffs and multicolored blues of the water greatly appealed to me. It was a cool, very windy day and the fog was slowly coming in. If you have never driven Highway 1 along the California coast, you have missed a rare treat. The road is narrow (just two lanes) and very winding, but well worth the trip. The scenery is outstanding and you may catch a glimpse of whales, sea otters, or elephant seals if you're lucky.

April and May BJP Pages

Almost done! The butterfly represents my turning 65 in April. It's called "Free to be Me". Working on this project this year has shown me more of who I really am. I think this is a good thing. LOL.

The May page is just called "May Flowers". I have to finish my September page and I will be done for this year. I am already looking forward to BJP 2008. Many ideas buzzing around in my head already. Too many projects to finish between now and then though. It seems like I can't stop signing up for each new thing that comes along. Oh well. That's me all over. At least I now have the time to work on them as much as I want to.

It's a Puzzlement is done

This doll has been such fun to do. I hadn't done a flat doll before. Of course, the required purple beads were no problem for me. I love purple. She is a challenge doll in the Beaded Art Dolls forum on Yahoo. It is a lively group who freely share their expertise with newer beaders. I'm very glad I joined the group. Soon I will be starting a new doll from a swap with others from around the world. Can't wait
to see what kind of kit I get. It should be fun. I still must put the backing on this doll with a picot edging. I'm getting to be quite expert at that with all the pins, pendants, and BJP pages I am doing.

Here is another pendant I made. I've discovered these things are very addictive. I no sooner get one finished, than I want to start another. Soon Mother's Day will be behind us and I must make myself settle and finish my BJP Pages. sometimes it's very hard to work on the big things when the little projects are calling.
This is a pin I made for my DIL's mother. She and her husband are ardent Raider's fans. I don't understand the attraction myself, but each to his or her own I guess.

Gift for a Friend

This is a pin I made for my friend Lynn's birthday. She has a beautiful blue blazer that this will compliment. She has been a good friend to me for some years now. We have enjoyed traveling together, going to bead shows and taking classes at the coast. Right now I'm very envious of her. She leaves soon to visit her family in Minnesota and then on to the Bead & Button show. I know she will have a great time taking classes and shopping.

New Pieces

I recently finished these pieces. The first will be a secondary raffle prize when the Pink Artist doll "Love Squared" is raffled off this coming fall. The pendant is approximately 2 1/2 inches across and has fresh water pearls and gemstones embedded in bead embroidery. The necklace is Russian Spiral.

The two pins below are the beginning of a line I hope to market eventually. It will consist of pins, pendants and possibly earrings and barrettes. It is such fun doing these small items and so rewarding to see them take shape. They will all be one of a kind. I never did like having to make the same thing repeatedly. They will have gemstones, crystals, and perhaps some unknown items included in the bead embroidery.

A friend of mine recently asked me for something to cover a hole in her favorite jacket, so I beaded a patch. Then I decided the jacket would look funny with one small patch, so I beaded three more. Someone asked me how she would be able to wash her denim jacket with all that beading attached. Hmmmm... Then I remembered a glue I had used for sequined patches several years ago at Christmas time. It's Allene's Tack It Over and Over. I'm going to put it on the patches tonight so it will have time to cure. Then we'll try it tomorrow. I'll let you all know how it works. The patch to your left is a pin that I made this morning. I have several patterns (shapes) I'm going to make into pins and pendants. What do you think? This is a new idea for me. A year ago I wouldn't have attempted it. Doing the BJP this year has given me the confidence to not only try new things, but to put them out there for the world to see.

It's a Puzzlement

This is a progess picture of my puzzle doll. The title comes from "The King and I". The colors I'm using remind me of the ball gown Deborah Kerr wore in the movie. These dolls are great fun to work on and a challenge in that we can only use the colors assigned. fortunately for me, I love purple. I was originally going to bead the back too, but changed my mind as I want to hang her on the wall.

I've been having fun this week working at my LBS. Can you think of a more fun place to work? And...I get to see all the new stuff coming in before anyone else. Yum!!! In truth, I'm just helping out, but I'm able to do so now that I'm retired, so why not? Have to get ready for work now. More later.

Boy's Handprint

This is the class sample for a class I am teaching next weekend. In a previous post, I showed a print for a 3 y/o girl. This one is much easier for a beginner in bead embroidery. It only uses the back stitch. I found all these fun charms for little guys and couldn't resist them. I have several ladies anxious to do this. It should be lots of fun. It's a good way to introduce people to bead embroidery.

Finished Hand

Whoo Hoo! Finished it. I'm happy with the way it turned out. I'm going to make one on a cobalt backround that will be less encrusted. It will have Boy-type charms and be done in primary colors. I just want students to be able to picture several different types of beading for this project.

Beady Family

As I have been brousing through different blogs these past weeks, I have seen a phenomenon that I just had to write about. Over the past 10 months I have been associated with the Bead Journal Project. Staying active both in beading and blogging, I have met so many wonderful people throughout the world. For a woman who was raised in a small town in Central California, it tickles me no end to mention communicating with someone in Scotland or Italy or New Zealand . More than that, however, it pleases me to know I have friends in those far reaching places.

It reminded me of a poem I wrote:

Touch their minds quietly.

The cameradery of beaders is like that of no other group with whom I have had contact. There is sharing of not only beady things, but personal things as well. There is support when one is ill, or in need. There is celebration when joyful things happen. What more could you ask of a group of friends?

New Project

This is the latest project I've started. I want to do a bead embroidery class using a child's handprint. I think it would make a great birthday or Mother's Day gift for Mom or Grandma. What do you think? It's a way of learning basic bead embroidery stitches and having fun too. You can add charms or any kind of special beads to make it appropriate for a specific person. I'm going to recommend students bring in their own hand outline, but will have some available to use. Can you imagine doing a newborn's hand for Mom? Or you could even use a footprint. Any feedback would be appreciated.

BFAC Doll

Here is an in-progress photo of my BFAC entry for this year. She is no where near finished, of course, but her name is Fire Dancer. She is going to be auctioned eventually to benefit Colorectal Cancer Research. I bought a kit, sight unseen, to do my project. I must use at least one of every kind of bead in the kit. I may add one kind of bead. I chose to add a silverlined orange to my kit. I made her face from a mold I had made from a doll. Her body style is similar to a doll I received in a swap with Speediebeadie a year or so ago. Dot's doll was about 4" tall. Fire Dancer is about 10" tall. I haven't done a doll for over a year so she is a real challenge for me. However, I did discover the joy of curved needles and they really help get into those tight places.

I'll keep you posted on her progress. I can't seem to put her down for very long. That doesn't help get my other projects done any faster. I'm finished through March with my BJP pages and am working on April.

Old and New

This is the first doll I ever made. It was great fun to work on her. I did most of the beading at Barnes & Noble and Border's bookstores. She is called Bookstore Browser. Prior to this I had never done any bead embroidery. I made her several years ago.

I have decided to do a doll for my BFAC project this year. Found some great fabric in my stash. Now to find the right face for her. I may have to make one to get the right color combo. I don't mind though. I love to play with clay.

I am jazzed that BJP will continue for another year. This has been a very positive experience for me. I am working to finish my last couple of month's pages and will then decide how to finish the whole project. I think I will have them framed, but don't know exactly how yet.

I am starting a new project that I hope to teach at my LBS soon. I'm going to be embroidering children's handprints. These will make great gifts for Mom or Grandma for birthdays and Mother's Day. I have sort of adopted my girlfriend's daughters so I have one surrogate great grandson here and a great granddaughter on the way. Can you imagine a tiny newborn handprint embroidered?

January BJP page

I finally finished this page. It was a bit labor intensive, but worth it in the long run. For me, this represents the start of a new year. There will be highs and lows and a few flashes of high intensity to live through. I have to finish some work on an older page and then I will be caught up through March.

I'm so glad Robin is considering continuing the BJP for another year. Even if that doesn't happen, I will continue to try to stretch myself and try new things. Learning more about myself and my skills this year has been good for me. Why mess with a good thing? Growth, in most forms, is a positive thing.

Beading For A Cure

The auctions for Beading for a Cure started yesterday. Each year, beaders buy a kit, sight unseen, to bead a project of their choosing to be auctioned for the benefit of Colorectal Cancer research. This project was begun in memory of another beader, Layne, who was struck by this terrible disease.

Learning New Things

Well, I'm learning more about how to do things on the computer everyday, thanks to my friends. I've been trying to update my blog for the past week or so. FYI I am definitely no computer expert. Fortunately for me, I have friends who are.
For the past 9 months I have learned about myself, my beading, and my computer. Not bad for an old lady. I do say that with tongue in cheek as I refuse to grow up even though I will be 65 soon.
After reviewing some of my older bead embroidery, I realized just how much I have learned in the past few months. It kind of makes me cringe when I look at the old stuff. Thanks to Robin and her BJP, I can see a significant difference in my work now. I know I have a long way to go to reach the goals I have set for myself, but I think they are attainable.
More than anything else, I am learning to look within myself for what I need. I want to put more of my emotions, positive and negative, into my beadwork. Bead embroidery is my sanity saver. ( There are those who would say it is too late, but.....).
I hope that Robin does another BJP, but even if she doesn't, this one has given me the confidence to enter into other projects such as the "Pink Artists" and this year I am doing a piece for Beading For a Cure (colorectal cancer research). I'm very excited about these projects. I not only get to bead, but to do it for a good cause just puts icing on the cake.

Winter Green - December page

Whoo Hoo! One more done. This is my December page called Winter Green. I found this Serephenite pendant and fell in love with the silvery green. Knew I had to do something with it. It was a very hard green to match though. I used some handmade paper for the backround, but I sure am glad I didn't have to handle it too much more. It really softens up fast. January page is started and on the way.
I finally feel as if I'm making some progress.

March BJP

Yes, I know it's not March yet, but I just had to do this one before I did the ones for December and January. These beads have been screaming at me for months now and I couldn't put them off any longer. I bought the Cherry Quartz several years ago at my first big (San Mateo) bead show. I went into overload and bought every thing in sight. LOL. Since coral is one of my favorite colors, I figured I would eventually find something to do with them. I started collecting things to go with them and found the perfect cabochon. From the beginning of BJP, this page was one of my goals. It went together fairly quickly, but just didn't fit December or January for me. So........March it is.

Pink Artist Squares

Just finished these this morning for the Pink Artist project. I am so glad to be able to be a part of this because research for breast cancer is so important. Too many women (and men too) have been struck down by this terrible disease. While great strides have been made, I know there must be more that we can do to prevent others from suffering. Monica put out the call and so many have answered. Too many of these artists have had to live through this disease.

It is my pleasure to contribute to such a worthwhile project. I hope this auction brings in many dollars to help with the research.

Blossoms in the Snow

I just finished my February page. It was originally to be for December, but it just didn't fit somehow. I like it much better for February. You will note I restrained myself and didn't bead every square inch on this one. It just didn't call for it. I am still working on December and January, but am making progress. I'll have some pics up soon. My chum Arther(itis) seems to be taking a vacation at the moment so I'm doing all the beading I can. Wonder if it's because I'm retired now?

I'm finally beginning to feel like a human being again. Still coughing, but that always seems to hang on forever, doesn't it? All things considered, I'm in a pretty good place right now. Guess I'd better get back to the beads.

Free At Last

This phrase has a whole new meaning to me now. I am no longer working for a living. Yeah! The down side of the past two weeks is having been sicker than a dog. I hate sinus infections!!! I always know I'll live through them, but don't always want to.

Enough whining! I am starting a whole new era in my life. My income may be slightly more limited, but having the time to create is going to be wonderful. I plan to teach more during the week at my LBS and basically just enjoy myself. At 64, I think I'm entitled to do this.

Bead embroidery will continue to be my first love, but there are some other areas I want to explore as well. Some needle felting, maybe some chain mailling. Who knows? I also still want to do some writing to promote better care for the mentally ill. It's something I feel very strongly about and I have some things that need to be said.

Frustration

It has been a very frustrating month for me. My beading has been minimal due to another arthritis flareup. I hate this! My left hand has been unusable a couple of days. I'm trying all the remedies the law allows to combat this insidious pain.

I refuse to give in to it completely. I am in the process of making 30 crystal bracelets as belated Christmas gifts to the ladies I work with. Only 12 more to go! I have to say they are being very patient waiting for their gifts. They work so hard everyday and oftentimes get so little recognition. They deserve something pretty.

I have missed doing my bead embroidery recently. I made a start today on a page based on a cab I bought a year or so ago. It will include some "cherry quartz" I bought at the first big bead show I went to see. I have to laugh when I think about that day. I went into major sensory overload. I must have bought everything I could get my hands on. LOL. I bought the quartz because I love that color more than any other. Oops! Don't let purple hear I said that.

I continue to be in awe of the wonderful work I see everyday in the BJP. I feel I have learned so much since I started this project. Not just techniques, but more importantly I am learning the reasons why others bead as they do. I'm learning to put my own feelings into my work and I can see a difference in before and after. Those projects I just do for the sake of doing just do not have the soul I want to see in them. Maybe that's why I'm doing so little jewelry lately. The bead embroidery calls to me and I enjoy it so much.

Had a wonderful Christmas. Anytime I can spend whole days with my grandsons is wonderful for me. They are growing so quickly. Sometimes I want to keep them small, but I also love seeing the changes as they get older. They are 18, 14, and 8 years old now. my DIL made a great picture album of the boys for all the grandma's. What a treat looking back and seeing them over the years. Had to be my favorite gift.

My beady family also had a great Christmas party. My LBS owner for whom I teach, gave all her teachers rolling duffle bags with our names on them. We all go to the bead shows together and now we'll know whose bag is whose. I received some wonderful storage pieces for my beads too. How lucky I am to have met these wonderful women.

I see I have been carried away with my blog entry, but I had lots to say.

Pool of a Mother's Tears

It's only the 18th of November and I'm finished. It seems fitting somehow that I finished this page on my daughter Michelle's birthday. She would have been 35 today. I believe working on this has helped me weather my November bout of depression. I can't kid myself that it will never return. I'm more realistic than that, I hope. In actual fact, I enjoyed working on this page.
I borrowed some ideas from all of you and will probably borrow more as time goes by. I included some thread embroidery this time. It's nice to know I haven't forgotten everything my grandmother taught me. Used to do tea towels and pillowcases when I was young. I'm anxious to get on with my next page.
